4.3 SPSS preparation

In SPSS, readers can import the CLSA datasets by the user interface: “File” $\to$ “Import Data” $\to$ “CSV Data” $\to$ select the datafile and click “Open”. Then follow the instruction on the screen and click “Ok”.

To create the stratum variable, Transform $\to$ Compute Variable $\to$ Type “$\text{StraVar}$” under “Target Variable” and “$\text{WGHTS\_GEOSTRAT\_TRM}$” under “Numeric Expression” $\to$ click: “Type & Labels” and select “String” in the “Type” panel.

We then declare the survey design by clicking “$\text{Analyze}$” $\to$ $\text{Complex Samples}$ $\to$ $\text{Prepare for Analysis}$ $\to$ click “$\text{Create a plan file}$” and choose a location and name as $\text{CLSADesign.csaplan}$ $\to$ “$\text{Next}$”. Under Strata, select the variables “$\text{StraVar}$” and select “$\text{WGHT\_INFLATION\_TRM}$” under “Sampling Weight” and accept the default settings.

By default, SPSS will ignore the PSUs with single observations during variance calculation.
