4.3 SPSS preparation

In SPSS, readers can import the CLSA datasets by the user interface: “File” \(\rightarrow\) “Import Data” \(\rightarrow\) “CSV Data” \(\rightarrow\) select the datafile and click “Open”. Then follow the instruction on the screen and click “Ok”.

To create the stratum variable, Transform \(\rightarrow\) Compute Variable \(\rightarrow\) Type “\(\texttt{StraVar}\)” under “Target Variable” and “\(\texttt{WGHTS_GEOSTRAT_TRM}\)” under “Numeric Expression” \(\rightarrow\) click: “Type & Labels” and select “String” in the “Type” panel.

We then declare the survey design by clicking “\(\texttt{Analyze}\)\(\rightarrow\) \(\texttt{Complex Samples}\) \(\rightarrow\) \(\texttt{Prepare for Analysis}\) \(\rightarrow\) click “\(\texttt{Create a plan file}\)” and choose a location and name as \(\texttt{CLSADesign.csaplan}\) \(\rightarrow\)\(\texttt{Next}\)”. Under Strata, select the variables “\(\texttt{StraVar}\)” and select “\(\texttt{WGHT_INFLATION_TRM}\)” under “Sampling Weight” and accept the default settings.

By default, SPSS will ignore the PSUs with single observations during variance calculation.
